Position Description

DEPARTMENT: Parks and Recreation

REPORTS TO: Aquatic Manager


SALARY: $16.00 hourly



This is a part time or temporary seasonal position responsible for the safety of all aquatic facility patrons.  This job involves preventing injuries, communication with patrons, enforcing rules and regulations, performing safety checks, responding to emergency situations correctly, and lifeguard staff supervision.  Some light ground and facility maintenance is required.  Must be in good physical condition and capable of mature judgment.

  • Assist in selecting, training, scheduling, evaluating, disciplining, and supervising part-time/seasonal Aquatic staff positions.
  • Assist in coordinating and administering staff training including customer service, scenario and evacuation drills, rescue skills, and yearly certification updates.
  • Interaction with public regarding aquatic or recreational inquiries and the ability to intervene and effectively deal with angry or dissatisfied patrons.
  • Communicate effectively with the Aquatic Supervisor, Assistant Parks and Recreation Director and Aquatics/Recreation staff.
  • Following and administering the rules and procedures set forth by the City of New Port Richey and Recreation Department.
  • Lifeguarding and enforcing facility rules as directed and scheduled.
  • Recognition of emergency situations and ability to administer first-aid and/or cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and an automated external defibrillator (AED).
  • Swim lesson instruction.
  • Assisting in special events as directed and scheduled.
  • Interaction with public in regard to aquatic and recreational inquiries.
  • Filling out required records and reports on all accidents and incidents that occur during shift.
  • Monitoring of pool chemicals.
  • Daily pool and restroom maintenance as scheduled and directed.
  • Mild ground maintenance including weeding, bush trimming, and sweeping.
  • Prevent injuries by minimizing or eliminating hazardous situations or behaviors.

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees, supervisors, and general public.
  • Knowledge and the ability to demonstrate approved lifesaving techniques.
  • Ability to quickly analyze and take control of situations or actions that require emergency intervention.
  • Ability to deal with stress related to emergency situations which demand immediate attention as well as staying calm in said emergencies.
  • Ability to comply with and enforce facility rules and regulations.
  • Ability to multi-task successfully.
  • Ability to follow instructions from Aquatic Supervisor, and Assistant Parks and Recreation Director.
  • Ability to maintain a professional attitude towards customers, staff, students and instructors.


Must possess a current Lifeguard Training certificate, CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer certificate, and Water Safety Instructor Certificate. A minimum of one season lifeguard experience.


Ability to work evenings, weekends, holidays, and during emergency situations. A Florida driver’s license, Florida identification card, or student picture ID is required.  Every New Port Richey employee is required to fill out a Disaster Response Survey and is subject to being required to report to work during a declared disaster.


Physical Ability:

This job requires work that may involve walking, standing and/or sitting for long periods of time.  Ability to climb stairs and ladders.  Ability to lift a minimum of 50 pounds.

Sensory Requirements:

Ability to hear, speak and understand conversations in English.  Ability to see, read, and comprehend letters, numbers, words, characters or symbols, which are both large and small. Ability to recognize smells that may indicate a dangerous condition. Ability to learn complex tasks and remember how to complete tasks without assistance once trained.


Job risks include exposure to human body fluids and waste material, UV rays and pool chemicals (chlorine, muriatic acid, CO2, etc.).  Ability to sit or stand outdoors in extreme heat and inclement weather.  Ability to work evenings, weekends, holidays and during emergency situations.  Ability to deal with stress related to emergency situations which demand immediate attention as well as staying calm in said emergencies.
