Position Description

DEPARTMENT: Parks and Recreation, Aquatics          

REPORTS TO: Aquatics Manager and Aquatics Coordinator

CLASSIFICATION STATUS: Part-Time Temporary, Non-Exempt

SALARY: $11.43 hourly

 

 

MAJOR FUNCTION:

This is a part time or temporary seasonal position responsible for the safety of all aquatic facility patrons.  This job involves preventing injuries, communication with patrons, enforcing rules and regulations, performing safety checks, and responding to emergency situations correctly.  Some light ground and facility maintenance is required.  Must be in good physical condition and capable of mature judgment.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

The list of essential functions, as outlined herein, is intended to be representative of the major tasks performed within this classification.   It is not necessarily descriptive of any one position in the class.  The omission of an essential function does not preclude management from assigning duties not listed herein if such duties are a logical assignment to the position.  Specific tasks on a day to day basis will reflect the overall areas of expertise for this position.

  • Lifeguarding and enforcing facility rules as directed and scheduled.
  • Recognition of emergency situations and ability to administer first-aid and/or cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and an automated external defibrillator (AED).
  • Assisting in special events as directed and scheduled.
  • Interaction with public in regard to aquatic and recreational inquiries.
  • Filling out required records and reports on all accidents and incidents that occur during shift.
  • Monitoring of pool chemicals.
  • Daily pool and restroom maintenance as scheduled and directed.
  • Mild ground maintenance including weeding, bush trimming, and sweeping.
  • Prevent injuries by minimizing or eliminating hazardous situations or behaviors.
  • Teach assigned swim lessons and classes according to City guidelines.
  • Keep accurate class and student records of all lessons.
  • Assist with registration for swim lessons.
  • Report registration problems, inappropriate level assignment of students, parent complaints and other related matters to Aquatics Coordinator or Aquatics Manager.
  • Obtain and complete paper work for certifying agency records.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: 

  • Ability to communicate clearly, both orally and written.

  • Ability to listen and ascertain the needs of patrons.
  • Ability to find and communicate accurate information concerning policies and procedures to patrons.
  • Ability to respond to patrons tactfully and courteously.
  • Ability to work independently and as a member of a team.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees, supervisors, and general public.
  • Knowledge and the ability to demonstrate approved lifesaving techniques.
  • Ability to quickly analyze and take control of situations or actions that require emergency intervention.
  • Ability to deal with stress related to emergency situations which demand immediate attention as well as staying calm in said emergencies.
  • Ability to comply with and enforce facility rules and regulations.
  • Ability to multi-task successfully.
  • Ability to follow instructions from Head Lifeguards, Aquatics Coordinator, and Aquatics Manager.
  • Ability to maintain a professional attitude towards customers, staff, students and instructors.

 

TRAINING, CERTIFICATIONS, AND EXPERIENCE: 

Must possess a current Lifeguard Training certificate and CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer certificate.   A Florida Driver’s License, Florida Identification card or student picture ID is required.  A minimum of one season lifeguard experience is required.

 

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: 

Ability to work evenings, weekends, holidays, and during emergency situations. A Florida driver’s license, Florida identification card, or student picture ID is required.  Every New Port Richey employee is required to fill out a Disaster Response Survey and is subject to being required to report to work during a declared disaster.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Physical Ability:

Requires work that involves walking, standing and/or sitting for long periods of time.  .  Ability to climb stairs and ladders and lift a minimum of 50 pounds.

Sensory Requirements:

Ability to hear, speak and understand in conversation in English in various tones of voice.  Ability to see, read, and comprehend letters, numbers, words, characters or symbols, which are both large and small.  Ability to recognize smells that may indicate a dangerous condition.  Ability to learn complex tasks and remember how to complete tasks without assistance once trained.

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Job risks include exposure to human body fluids and waste material, UV rays and pool chemicals (chlorine, muriatic acid, CO2, etc.).  Ability to sit or stand outdoors in extreme heat and inclement weather.  Ability to work evenings, weekends, holidays and during emergency situations.  Ability to deal with stress related to emergency situations which demand immediate attention as well as staying calm in said emergencies.
